A PIL has been lodged in the Delhi High Court to seek an order to shift the Delhi Zoo, and has made the court ask the Central government a response for it. The PIL wants the Delhi Zoo to get shifted from its current location, because, the huge increase in traffic around it has led the animals to live under stress.

A division bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Sanjiv Khanna, has already issued a notice to the Central Zoo Authority and wants the reply by May 11, 2011 on a Public Interest Litigation, which has been filed by Hargyan Singh Gahlot, an environmental engineering IIT post-graduate and presently a final year law student.

In his appeal to the Delhi High Court, Hargyan Singh Gahlot has stated that the zoo must be shifted from its current location to the border of Delhi, as its current location is like a “death trap” for the animals.

In his petition, he also suggested to move the Delhi Zoo from Mathura Road, which is also very near to the Delhi High Court to Dhausa border or Auchandi border, so that the animals can get a favorable environment. The petitioner has also sought an order for the up-gradation of the old infrastructures of the zoo, and the animal holding areas as well.
